Our family has been farming in the Rondout Valley for seven generations; a blink of the eye when compared to the thousands of years the land has been feeding the inhabitants of this valley.
My ancestors farmed in the town of Accord, and around 1949, my father purchased the 175 acre farm my brother and I farm in Marbletown. We currently grow about 175 acres of small vegetables and specialty crops on this land. Some is grown in large quantities to supply local supermarkets, and Whole Foods markets in NYC as well as our farm stand and other regional stands.
Our main crop, and the one we’re probably best known for, is sweet corn. We’re lucky to be situated in an excellent place to grow this product. An amazing combination of soils and climate have made this valley the premiere sweet corn growing region in the US. In the 1960s and 70s 6,000 acres of sweet corn were grown here in the Rondout Valley, and shipped throughout the country and Canada.
